The title was decided with a win

Jeffrey Herlings secured his sixth motocross world championship at the 2026 MXGP of Türkiye. He did not ride for points alone: a race-one victory put the title beyond reach and a second win completed a perfect 1-1 day. The result made him only the fourth rider in the history of the sport to reach six world championships.

A first championship in Honda colours

The Afyon result delivered Herlings his third title in the premier class and his first with Honda HRC Petronas. It also extended an extraordinary run to 17 consecutive race victories and five perfect Grand Prix weekends in a row. By the end of the event his career record stood at 123 Grand Prix wins and 233 individual race wins, according to the official championship report.

What number six changes

The number puts Herlings in a very small historical group while adding a different manufacturer to his title story. It also reframes the 2027 season: the Dutchman moves from challenger to defending champion, and every rival now measures progress against the pace that closed 2026. Results and records in this article are fixed to the Türkiye weekend and will not be silently mixed with later statistics.

How the decisive race unfolded

Herlings entered the opening race knowing that finishing ahead of Romain Febvre would settle the championship. He took the holeshot line in front, controlled the race and won by more than three seconds. The title was celebrated immediately before the team fitted world-champion graphics for race two.

A record with context

Six championships place Herlings alongside a historic group, but the path was not linear. Injuries interrupted several seasons in which his speed was already at title level. The 2026 crown therefore represents both outright performance and the ability to complete a championship campaign under pressure. That is why the first Honda title carries particular weight.
