A confirmed end to the Honda chapter

Honda HRC Petronas has confirmed that Ruben Fernandez is leaving the factory motocross team after four seasons. The announcement closes a partnership that began in 2023, after the Spaniard had established himself in the Honda 114 Motorsports structure. Honda has wished Fernandez well for the future but has not named his next team or programme.

An immediate breakthrough in 2023

Fernandez made an instant impact in his first factory season. He won the MXGP of Argentina at Villa La Angostura for his first Grand Prix victory, then added podium finishes in Spain, Germany and Italy. Those results helped him finish fifth in the 2023 MXGP World Championship and established him as a regular contender near the front of the premier class.

Injury interrupted 2024

The following season did not produce a complete campaign. Injuries limited Fernandez to four Grands Prix in 2024, removing any realistic chance of building on his first Honda HRC year. That context matters when comparing the seasons: the reduced programme was the result of an injury-hit year, not a full championship decline.

A strong rebound in 2025

Fernandez returned to a full campaign in 2025 and finished fourth in the MXGP standings. Honda records three podium appearances during that season. It was his best final championship position with the team and showed that he could recover from the disrupted 2024 campaign and again score consistently across a full year.

The 2026 season and what remains open

The number 70 rider added another podium in 2026 and was tracking towards another top-five championship result before a crash in Türkiye ended his season early. Honda has now confirmed the separation, but neither the team nor Fernandez has announced his destination for 2027. Until an official statement names a new programme, any claimed move remains unverified.
