Fifty points decide the Grand Prix
MXGP and MX2 riders score in each of the two main races. The FIM scale starts at 25 points for first, then 22 for second and 20 for third, and continues down to one point for twentieth. Winning both races therefore produces 50 points and a perfect Grand Prix overall.
Qualifying creates the extra ten
The Saturday qualifying race has a separate championship scale: ten points for the winner, nine for second and one for tenth. Those points are added to the rider's World Championship total, but the regulations state that they do not count toward the final classification of the Grand Prix itself. A rider who wins qualifying and both main races can therefore leave with 60 championship points while the event result still shows 50.
Race 2 breaks an event tie
Two riders can finish the main races with the same total. A first and a second score 47 points, whichever order they arrive in. In that situation the FIM uses Race 2 to decide the Grand Prix overall. The rider with the better second-race result is placed ahead, so a 2-1 score beats a 1-2 score for the event victory.
The championship tie works differently
When riders are level in the championship standings, the regulations first compare their better placings. If the tie remains, points scored in the most recent race — including a qualifying race where applicable — decide the order, working backwards through earlier races if necessary. That is why equal totals can still produce a clear red-plate order.
